Gero Strobel is guest-editor of the special issue "Generative AI and the Tension Between Automation and Human Agency" in the journal Electronic Markets

We are pleased to announce that Gero Strobel host as guest-editor the Special Issue Generative AI and the Tension Between Automation and Human Agency in the Electronic Markets journal.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is revolutionizing the way we use technology. The integration of these technologies into platform and service ecosystems holds tremendous potential for automation and efficiency gains. At the same time, it raises critical questions about the tension between automation and human agency. The interplay between AI-driven automation and the potential for human-AI collaboration gives rise to the following questions:

  • How do we navigate a world where automation increasingly takes over traditional roles?

  • How will human creativity, long regarded as a domain of superiority, evolve in the presence of AI that can replicate human artistic capabilities?

  • What are the ethical, social, and organizational implications of this shifting landscape?

  • How will the shift in agency affect value creation in (non-) human-centric markets?

  • How will the tension between automation and human agency impact networked businesses?

This Special Issue provides a platform for discussing the theoretical, methodological, and practical implications of these transformative developments.

The submission deadline is August 31, 2025. Further information on the submission process can be found here:
