The Chair of Information Systems and Software Engineering (SOFTEC) is represented with two scientific contributions at this year's European Conference on Information System (ECIS). The papers on Internet of Things (IoT)-based business models by Robert Woroch and Gero Strobel and on Internet of Nano-Things (IoNT) systems by Gero Strobel have been accepted to the conference.
ECIS is one of the world's most renowned conferences in the field of information systems and has been held annually since 1993 under a changing topic. This year, ECIS 2021 will be held under the motto "Human Values Crisis in a Digitizing World" and will not take place in Marrakech as originally planned, due to the COVID 19 pandemic, but online as part of the "AIS Virtual Conference Series" from June 14 - 16, 2021.
The paper "UNDERSTANDING VALUE CREATION IN DIGITAL COMPANIES – A TAXONOMY OF IOT-ENABLED BUSINESS MODELS" by Robert Woroch and Gero Strobel addresses the challenges in the context of identifying and developing value-adding, IoT-based offerings. As a link between strategy and business processes, business models provide a holistic view of organizations, but do not yet take IoT-specific characteristics into account. To address this shortcoming, a taxonomy for describing IoT-based business models was developed and evaluated using a sample of more than 100 empirical objects. The study also provides insights into the design of business models in the domains of consumer electronics and healthcare. On the one hand, the taxonomy serves as a tool for examining the integration of IoT into innovative business models and, on the other hand, as a basis for further research in this area.
The second publication "HONEY, I SHRUNK THE INTERNET OF THINGS: AN INTERNET OF NANO-THINGS TAXONOMY" by Gero Strobel addresses the next evolutionary stage of the Internet of Things, the Internet of Nano-Things. This approach combines the conventional IoT paradigm with methods and concepts from the nanotechnology field. The purpose is to exploit completely new, hitherto unprecedented application potentials by reducing the size of the objects and thus changing the material properties. The publication provides a first classification approach in the form of a taxonomy for the classification and description of the fundamental concepts of this field.
